A research scientist position is available at the San Luis Valley Research Center in the Colorado Potato Breeding and Selection Program. This position will conduct research associated with the development of improved potato cultivars including molecular studies aimed at developing a better understanding of economically important traits, i.e. disease resistance, health attributes, etc. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in plant breeding and genetics, plant biotechnology, or a related field, and at least three years of post-doctoral experience, or its equivalent. Formal training should include statistics, computer applications (statistical, database, word processing, and spreadsheets), plant pathology, plant physiology, and greenhouse management. Applicants should have experience and/or publications in the fields of plant breeding and genetics, plant-pathogen interaction, plant biotechnology and molecular genetics, and plant tissue culture as it relates to new cultivar development. In addition, ideal candidates will have substantial experience managing a breeding program for vegetatively propagated crops, especially potato breeding, and acting as a mentor to undergraduate, graduate students, post docs and/or high school students working on the project.
Duties will include initiating and conducting independent research in potato breeding and genetics in support of the project leader's research program by:
Conducting and collaborating on interdisciplinary projects in plant breeding and genetics, plant biotechnology, plant pathology, plant physiology, and tissue culture;
Publishing and presenting regularly on research, including interim and annual reports, at professional and clientele meetings including field days and other outreach activities;
Overseeing the research of project staff, including temporary employees, graduate students, and technical support;
Mentoring undergraduate and high school students interning in various field, lab, and greenhouse activities;
Day-to-day management and supervision of greenhouse, lab, and field activities (crossing, seedling production, minituber production for seedstock development, field trial management, seed production, tuber quality analysis, etc.);
Data collection, management, and analysis for greenhouse, lab, and field activities (Access, AgroGen II, and SAS);
Assisting the project leader to maintain liaison with all segments of the potato industry and facilitating feedback on performance of advanced selections.
